How I work
Techniques used
Direct technique
It’s the most versatile technique. Under certain conditions, it can be used for all mosaic sizes, for paintings as well as sculptures.
Indirect technique
It’s what’s known as floor mosaic, which I use when the mosaic surface needs to be flat. It’s ideal for tables, floors, etc.
What I work with
Materials used
Italian mosaic glass
While this material might be the most expensive, it’s also the most diverse in terms of colors, and it’s the easiest to work with. It’s processed by cutting it into individual pieces.
Marble and other natural stones
This material isn’t as expensive as glass, it’s usually easy to work with, but it doesn’t have as wide a range of colors.
Ceramics
These are industrially manufactured tiles and claddings that offer an endless variety of colors and patterns. The advantage is their low cost, but processing them is more complex. They are ideal for interior use and furniture.
My story
About me
I’m Tereza Matyska Mičánková, and I started working with mosaics 20 years ago. I was searching for something that would satisfy my creative drive while also being practical. Mosaics proved to be the perfect fit. I traveled to Ravenna, Italy, the Mecca of mosaic art, and took a course at one of the local schools. This course wasn’t my last; I’m still in touch with the school, continuously learning new things and receiving advice.
One of the biggest challenges was finding materials and tools in the Czech Republic that were comparable to those used in Italy. I managed to replace some, but for others, I still need to look beyond the borders.
I work with various techniques and materials. Recently, I’ve been creating paintings based on my own drawings. However, I can also create a mosaic based on a photograph, such as a portrait.
Mosaics aren’t cheap. They’re labor-intensive, requiring time and patience. If I use mosaic glass or marble, they’re expensive materials. I try to recycle various old pieces and use every material to the last bit. I collect old frames, which I then use for mosaics.
There’s not much room for repairs in mosaics; everything must be carefully planned in advance because you won’t get a second chance. The price of a mosaic reflects innovation, ideas, time, work, and investment in materials. The result is authentic craftsmanship with its own artistic contribution.

New sculpture
I’m working on a new sculpture. I don’t make sculptures very often because I’m not a sculptor, but I want to create another protective spirit – you place it at home facing outward, and it wards off evil spirits. Of course, it’s just an idea inspired by the myths of South America, but I think mosaic is perfect for it, and I’ve had one in my window for 15 years already 😊
There’s still a lot of work to be done on the new one, but you can already see what it might look like. I used ceramic fragments from my grandmother’s dishes that unfortunately broke. But this way, they will continue to serve a purpose, and it’s also quite circular.
